Form a 60x70 meters field using the markers. Place a full-size goal on the centre of the short sides. Near the 4 corners of the field form four 15x20 zones using the markers (2 red zones and 2 blue in the figure). Split the field using a line of markers (white dotted line in the figure). Split the players into 2 teams of 8 players and arrange them on the field with the 4-3-1 playing system. The goalkeepers are in goals.
- At the coach’s signal players start a 8v8 play aiming to score
- The playing area includes some areas that are closed to wide defenders, to impose the rotation desired by Total Football
Example of a valid goal: the central defender tries to counter the orange wing in B1 but the play is completed with a cross in the middle
- The goal is valid only when both wingers and the striker are in the opponents half of the field
- Orange side wde defenders in the figure cannot defend inside the two red zones
- While white wide defenders cannot defend inside the two blue zones
- Closed areas for the wide defenders impose the midfielders and the central defenders to restrict spaces observing the switch principle of Total Football
- Encourage wide defenders to attack outer attack zones so as to get them used to widening the field as much as possible creating overloads on the flanks
- When the ball reaches one of the outer zones, the wide defenders have to rotate positions to cover the teammate who presses that zone
